Short-term Visits

Opportunities for researchers from developing countries

The ICTP Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics section offers yearly a number of grants for short-term visits. The purpose of visits is to perform own theoretical studies in areas of expertise of the CMSP Section in close interaction with the Section's resident staff and visiting scientists. As a rule these visits may be for a maximum period of 1 month.

Scientists from developing countries are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to requests for visits outside the summer period. Candidates should apply using the ICTP online application system. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

A short (max. 1 page) research plan, for the expected visit at ICTP should also be added. At least two recommendation letters (to be sent separately by the referees after submission of application) are required for junior scientists, postdocs and graduate students.

In case of self-funded applicants (not requesting support), the above documentation must be accompanied by a letter from the home institute certifying the full coverage of their visit expenses (travel, board and lodging) and sent separately to cm@ictp.it

Please note that the beginning of our short-term visit opportunities programme may also depend on the current pandemic situation.

CMSP Postdoctoral Positions

ICTP seeks applications for Postdoctoral positions starting Fall 2022 from outstanding young scientists of any nationality with a strong research record.

With about 50 academic members (faculty, visitors, postdocs and graduate students), an intense programme of workshops and conferences, and close collaborations with local scientific institutions such as SISSA, Elettra, and the University of Trieste, the CMSP section provides a vibrant international research environment. Postdoctoral fellows are also encouraged, and supported, to participate in activities in developing countries in order to promote the mission of ICTP.

The ICTP takes seriously its commitment to equal opportunity and diversity in hiring, and in its global mission to promote science in the developing world.

Fellows must have completed a PhD in physics or related disciplines prior to the start of their Fellowship. Preference will be given to applicants in the areas of expertise of the CMSP group; candidates who have obtained their PhD after 2018 will be given priority.

ICTP offers internationally competitive remuneration and a number of benefits. Appointments will be made for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further year. Candidates should apply through the ICTP online application system.

"Ludwig Boltzmann" Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship

With about 30 group members, an intense programme of workshops and conferences, and close collaborations with local scientific institutions such as SISSA, Elettra, and the University of Trieste, the CMSP group provides a vibrant international research environment for the "Ludwig Boltzmann" fellow. The "Ludwig Boltzmann" fellow is also encouraged, and supported, to participate in activities in developing countries in order to promote the mission of the ICTP.

ICTP offers internationally competitive remuneration and a number of benefits, including a pension contribution and special allowances for family members. The take-home salary is set at 2,700 Euro monthly. The "Ludwig Boltzmann" appointment will be made for three years, with the possibility of renewal for one more year. Preference will be given to applicants in the areas of expertise of the CMSP group. For details on research areas please visit the CMSP web page. Candidates should apply using the ICTP online application system. They are required to arrange for the submission of three letters of recommendation by established researchers. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
