The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) announced the winners of its contest, "Stampa la tua idea in 3D", which was targeted at students enrolled in secondary schools in the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia.
The contest winners included:
- Marco Carpone, of the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Alessandro Volta, Trieste, for an artistic design
- Marta Manzin, of Liceo Scientifico Duca degli Abruzzi di Gorizia, for the design of an object that can be used by physics instructors to teach students about the effect of mass on velocity
- Matteo Calzi, also of the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Alessandro Volta, for an object that can be used to hold a remote control or other items, making them easy to find
The winners were recognized at a prize ceremony held at ICTP on Friday 7 June at 16:30 at ICTP.
ICTP launched the contest in March 2013 as a way to increase awareness of 3D printing technology and to discover new ways it can be used. Enrique Canessa, coordinator of ICTP's Science Dissemination Unit (SDU), which organized the contest and oversees the Centre's 3D Printing Lab, was impressed at the level of sophistication reflected in the winning entries. "The winners have the soul of researchers, and the mentality of entrepreneurs," he said, noting that the competitors took part in the contest on their own intitiative.
ICTP opened its 3D Printing Lab in February 2013 ICTP to promote the use of this new, low-cost technology in science education, particularly in developing countries.
