New agreement strengthens research collaboration, capacity building
ICTP and Indonesia

ICTP has signed an agreement with the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to promote scientific capacity building and collaboration. The agreement paves the way for research cooperation in numerous fields of ICTP expertise, including geoscience, medical physics, renewable energy, and computing scientific instrumentation. Collaborative activities will include joint scientific meetings and research projects, the exchange and training of scientists, and joint publications.

The agreement with Indonesia is in line with other, recent cooperations between ICTP and national agencies and governments. It will also help support  ICTP's goal to strengthen its programmes in the field of computational sciences through the establishment of an international consortium on scientific computing.

“Unlike at the time of Abdus Salam, the countries with emerging economies like Indonesia or Brazil now have well-developed scientific communities," said ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar, adding, "It makes more sense for ICTP to engage with them as equal partners to provide the crucial element of internationalisation. Open Science in the coming decade must include a notion of open access to computing resources. ICTP has been working towards  this objective to make resources in high performance computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence or quantum computing  globally available for scientific research, in the framework of an International Consortium with partners from around the world with national commitments. I’m glad BRIN is joining these efforts.”

In  2022, the Centre signed an agreement with South Africa's National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) to strengthen their collaboration and support of basic and computational science in South Africa.  Similar agreement with IBM and Brazil are also close to finalization. The agreement with Indonesia is part of this overall strategy and will bring in Indonesia as an important  partner of the Consortium.
