Physics in South America

ICTP's partner institute in Brazil, the ICTP- South American Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-SAIFR) is celebrating its 12th anniversary with a number of scientific and public events at its headquarters in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The three-day anniversary celebration runs from 18 to 20 February, with many of the talks livestreamed. Invited speakers include Physics Nobel Laureate David Gross, as well as ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar and ICTP physicist Rosario Fazio.

The ICTP-SAIFR event takes place as ICTP celebrates its own 60th anniversary during 2024 by holding special anniversary science activities throughout the developing world. In addition to the event in Brazil, ICTP has organised conferences, schools and workshops in 7 countries. The full calendar can be viewed on ICTP's 60th anniversary web page.

ICTP-SAIFR was founded thanks to the collaboration of ICTP and Institute for Theoretical Physics of São Paulo State University (UNESP) and the São Paulo Research Funding Agency (FAPESP). It is a regional hub for local scientific development and a focal point of fundamental research in theoretical physics in South America. It plays a crucial role as a place where students and scientists from all over the continent can come together for activities, research and learning opportunities. It is active in cutting-edge research in physics and mathematics, and has a strong inclination for innovative and multidisciplinary research at the intersection of physics, mathematics and biology.
