ICTP Scientists at Accademia dei Lincei

The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei is among the oldest scientific academies in Europe and Italy’s most prestigious cultural institutions. It aims to promote science and culture in their highest expression.

Every year, new members are elected to the academy to help advance its mission. This year’s new cohort includes two ICTP researchers: scientist emeritus Filippo Giorgi of the Earth System Physics section, and Don Zagier, holder of the Ramanujan International Chair in Mathematics.

Climate scientist Filippo Giorgi joins the Accademia dei Lincei as a Corresponding Member for the class of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Mathematician Don Zagier, a number theorist and the holder of the International Ramanujan Chair in Mathematics, has been named Foreign Member for the same class.

Giorgi joined ICTP in 1998 and helped establish the Earth system physics section there, which he led from 2005 until earlier this year. He also contributed to the first five reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which won the Nobel Price for peace in 2007.

Zagier became the first holder of ICTP's Ramanujan International Chair in 2022. Before that, he was the Distinguished Staff Associate in ICTP's Mathematics section. In addition to his ICTP affiliation, Zagier is a distinguished affiliated member of the Trieste-based Institute for Geometry and Physics, run jointly by ICTP and SISSA. Zagier is also director emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn and associate member of the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics.

Accademia dei Lincei will officially welcome its new members at a ceremony that will take place in Rome on Friday 8 November 2024.
