ICTP has become a sector member of the International
Telecommunication Union's Development Sector (ITU-D). Sector
membership opens the way for participation in the work of important
ITU-D activities such as study groups in the Sector's Regional and
World Telecommunication Conferences, advisory groups, and other
relevant workshops, seminars and meetings.
"Membership of the ITU gives ICTP a unique opportunity to make an
important and valued contribution to the scientific and
technological advances rapidly reshaping the world around us," said
ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo, adding, "This is a new and
important step in the long-time collaboration between ITU and ICTP
through the work of our Aeronomy and Radiopropagation Laboratory
(ARPL)."
ICTP and ITU have cooperated on several projects benefitting
developing countries. For example, the two institutes have offered
workshops on low-cost wireless networking, including a recent
conference on wireless technologies for
environmental monitoring. In addition, ITU Secretary
General Hamadoun Touré attended the November 2010
inauguration of ICTP's Guglielmo Marconi ICT Wireless
Laboratory.
The laboratory supports ICTP's training programmes on wireless
communications technologies conducted by the ARPL, which provide
much-needed support in wireless technology education to students
and researchers from developing countries.
