Quantum Roundtable to Launch Salam Centennial

On 29 January, ICTP will launch a year of events to celebrate the centennial of its founder, Physics Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam and his enduring legacy.

The year of commemoration will begin with a roundtable on "Opportunities and Challenges of Quantum Science and Technology", featuring renowned scientists from academia and industry who will discuss the impact of quantum developments on society and the need to assure that quantum technology can be accessed by and will benefit all.

Confirmed panelists are Tommaso Calarco of the University of Bologna,Italy, and Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany; Sabrina Maniscalco, CEO and Co-Founder of the quantum startup Algorithmiq, Finland; Dragan Mihailovic of the Jozef Stefan Institute, the CENN Nanocenter and the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Peter Zoller of the Institute of Quantum Optic and Quantum Information, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Austria.

The roundtable takes place as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), proclaimed by the United Nations and celebrated in 2025, winds down its year of events. ICTP has been a major partner of the initiative, whose scientific committee was chaired by ICTP Senior Research Scientist Rosario Fazio.

The 29 January roundtable immediately follows ICTP's 2026 Salam Distinguished Lecture Series, to be held from 27 to 29 January and featuring Peter Zoller and Ignacio Cirac, whose lectures will address the theme "From Quantum Information to Transformative Technologies—A Journey of Remarkable Discoveries".

Both events will be livestreamed at www.ictp.it/livestream.
