ICTP announces two opportunities for young scientists from developing countries who want to prepare themselves for doctoral studies in physics or mathematics. Both are now accepting applications for the 2018-19 academic year.
One option is ICTP’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme, a year-long, intensive course of study in physics or mathematics conducted at ICTP’s campus in Trieste, Italy. Diploma students gain the knowledge and discipline they need to pursue a PhD anywhere in the world. A limited number of scholarships are awarded to successful candidates from developing countries (with particular emphasis on students from the least developed regions of the world) to cover travel and living expenses during their stay at ICTP. The selection of the candidates is based on their university performance as well as on academic recommendations. Consult the Postgraduate Diploma Programme’s application and admissions page for more details.
A second option is a two-year master’s programme based at ICTP’s new partner institute, the ICTP-East African Institute for Fundamental Research at the University of Rwanda. Fields of study include condensed matter physics, physics of the solid Earth, and high energy physics. The first year of the programme is meant to bring students from various countries to a uniform standard, while the second year is devoted to the specialized areas and culminates with a thesis.
On successful completion, students will be awarded an MSc from the University of Rwanda. It is expected that a fair proportion of the students will go on to PhD programmes either at the University of Rwanda or other institutes around the world. There are scholarships available for Rwandan students and a small number of scholarships for students from other countries. For more information and a link to the online application visit the programme’s web page.
The application deadline for both programs is 31 January 2018.
