ICTP was saddened to learn of the passing of theoretical physicist Yoichiro Nambu, who died on 5 July 2015 in Osaka, Japan.
Nambu won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics. ICTP recognized the brilliance of his work earlier than that by awarding him the 1986 Dirac Medal for "for being one of the first physicists to formulate the idea of spontaneous symmetry breaking and in particular, chiral symmetry breaking in relativistic particle physics." He lectured at the Centre in 1996 at the Trieste Conference on Quarks and Leptons.
More details about his Dirac Medal are here.
